Transcription: The key spices used in Europe were cloves, nutmeg and pepper from the Indies. Muslim merchants bought the merchandise from its growers and sold it at much higher prices to merchants from Venice or Genoa. By the time the spices arrived in Spain, a dozen different traders had added their mark up to the price. A direct trade route to the Indies would turn this expense into a profit.
